The Perfect Coast is an initiative set up by an independent grouping of small hotels and house owners in Sri Lanka to help restore and conserve the country's coastline.
The effects of coastal deforestation and destruction of offshore coral reefs over the last few decades were very clearly illustrated by the 2004 tsunami which devastated three quarters of the country's coastline.
The Perfect Coast initiative aims to help reverse the above situation by replanting trees in areas most affected by deforestation.
Nurseries have been set up in which to grow saplings which will then be planted out. Participating members will plant at their own expense a tree for each guest that stays at their property. Local schools and fishing communities will be encouraged to help in the planting process.
In time we hope to set up similar measures for marine conservation, especially turtle and coral conservation.
